
PUNE, May 22: Pune Heritage Conservation Committee chairman P S Palande today underlined the importance of cooperation from the citizens, industry and State Government, for raising funds to preserve heritage structures within the Pune municipal limits.
He was speaking at the inauguration of an exhibition of photographs of heritage buildings organised by the Pune Municipal Corporation PMC at the Balgandharva Art Gallery. The exhibition was inaugurated by Pune Municipal Commissioner Rajiv Agarwal.
Referring to the paucity of funds for preserving the heritage structures, Palande said the industry and State Government, along with the municipal corporation, would have to pitch in to create a separate fund. The citizens too could participate in the effort, Palande clarified.
It may be mentioned here that the Union Ministry of Environment in its draft regulation for conservation of heritage buildings, heritage precincts and natural features within municipal areas, has mentioned that a separate fund may be created with a view to giving monetary help for preserving heritage structures.
This fund may would be kept at the disposal of the municipal commissioner 8211; and the municipal corporation 8211; who will make disbursement from the funds on the advice of the Heritage Conservation Committee. Provision for such a fund may be made through District Planning and Development Council budget, according to the draft regulation.
Agarwal expressed the hope that the elected representatives would extend a helping hand in creating the fund.
The exhibition was a first step towards creating awareness amongst the Puneites about the importance of preserving the city8217;s heritage, he said.
