MUMBAI, July 22: The week-long training camp organised by Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA) and conducted by BAI’s Chinese coach Zhu Xiao Dong concluded at Navi Mumbai Sports Association (NMSA) on Tuesday. 21 promising juniors — 15 boys and six girls — participated in the camp.

MBA president Pradeep Gandhe said it was impossible to make champions in the short span of one week, but the workouts were a pointer for the players, an indication of the effort they would have to make to get there.

State doubles champion Kranti Sane agreed. The articulate 18-year-old from Pune said, “the camp will help me to train systematically. Normally we perform exercises without understanding their significance. In addition, Dong analysed each one of us individually. He asked us to make some adjustment in the shots, and told the girls to improve their leg muscles.”

For Anand Pawar, the junior-most in the camp, the workouts were 150 times what he normally did. Nitin Ingole of Aurangabad, who was told by chief guestMrs S Shroff of United Phosphorus to popularise the game in his district, said, “For four years I’ve been playing the same game, there has been no improvement. Dong suggested some changes, and asked me to play more consistently.”

Dong himself was unhappy with the short duration, and said he would have preferred a more intensive session.

SHUTTLES FOR DISTRICTS: In its endeavour to improve the game in the interiors, MBA has enjoined all districts to use Yonex shuttles during tournaments, and will support ten districts to the tune of Rs 10,000 each, in an ITC-sponsored scheme.
