BEIJING, May 7: China will help Kerala partially offset its electricity shortage by assisting the State in exploiting its potential for small hydro projects SHP, according to Kerala8217;s Electricity Minister here.

8220;We have signed an MoU with China to set up 18 ship projects in Kerala and this will be a boon for the State since we are aiming to double the power generation capacity by 2000,8221; State Electricity Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

Kerala8217;s present power generation capacity was stagnant for a long time and this has caused severe power shortage. The State has the potential to generate 500 MW of electricity through SHP projects, according to a conservative study.

8220;Our plan is to double power generation from 1,500 MW to 3,000 MW by 2000,8221; the Minister added. 8220;The Chinese are well-known for their strength in SHP projects and by teaming up with them, the KSEB will be able to generate more power, 8221; he said.
