AMRITSAR, May 19: Former Union External Affairs Minister R L Bhatia today described the nuclear tests “most untimely and undesired”.

Talking to media persons here today, he said the BJP had taken the decision to only gain political mileage. He said there was no immediate threat to India’s security, but was to the stability of the BJP government, who wanted to divert public attention and tried to capture the sentiments of people by testing the bomb.

Commenting on the Indo-Chinese relations, he said the present government was working to deteriorate the already sensitive relations with China by declaring it India’s number one enemy just to vindicate its stand before the international community. He said such statements would only provoke China to take counter steps which may lead to the arms race in this part of the sub-continent.
