China called envoy to express appreciation: Pranab

Pranab Mukherjee said China had requested India to take necessary measures to ensure security of Chinese establishments.

Government on Thursday told Parliament that China had called Indian envoy to Beijing Nirupama Rao to express its 8216;appreciation8217; at the 8216;prompt action8217; taken against Tibetan protesters who 8216;forcibly entered8217; the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi last month.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said China had requested Indian government to continue to take necessary measures to ensure the security of Chinese diplomatic and consular establishments as well as the safety of Chinese citizens.

He noted that some Tibetan refugees 8220;forcibly entered8221; the premises of Chinese Embassy on the evening of March 21 and that the government took 8220;prompt action in apprehending them8221;.

Later that evening, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs 8220;sought a meeting8221; with Indian Ambassador in Beijing and 8220;expressed appreciation at the prompt action taken by the government,8221; the minister said.

Rao told Beijing that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure security and safety of Chinese diplomatic and consular establishments as well as the safety of the Chinese citizens, he said.

Media reports had earlier said that the Chinese Foreign Ministry had summoned Rao past midnight to express displeasure and concern over the storming of the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi by Tibetan protestors.
