He has maintained silence for long, especially because of two years of illness, but when Pandit Bhimsen Joshi speaks, no one dares not to listen. And speak he did in Pune last week, turning the tables and taking on the media.

8220;You are very powerful and what you write can create havoc,8221; said the doyen of Indian classical music as he addressed scribes. He had come to speak at the music festival he has founded, Sawai Gandharva, and the media trooped in to give him an audience. Recounting how a national daily once criticised a sarangi player who accompanied him, he said: 8220;Such was the write-up that the man stopped playing the sarangi and has not touched it since.8221;

For once, the journalists, including some heavyweights, squirmed. And Panditji ended the day with one little request: could he have some chewing tobacco. After much frantic searching, a senior scribe obliged. Let8217;s hope this helps mend fences.
