Anandpur Sahib MP Malvinder Singh Kang has written to the Prime Minister seeking strict action against Delhi BJP minister Kapil Mishra for allegedly circulating a doctored video to provoke outrage within the Sikh community.
In his letter dated January 17, Kang said forensic science laboratory reports from Punjab and Delhi had conclusively established that a video purportedly showing former Delhi chief minister Atishi making derogatory remarks about Sikh Gurus was fabricated. He said the reports confirmed that no such words were ever spoken.
Kang alleged that the video was knowingly propagated by Mishra with the objective of inciting communal disharmony and drawing political mileage by exploiting Sikh religious sentiments. He said the act went beyond a political lapse and amounted to a deliberate attempt at blasphemy.
The MP said the incident was particularly disturbing as it coincided with the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, who laid down his life to protect religious freedom. Using falsehoods to invoke the legacy of the Sikh Gurus for political purposes was an unforgivable violation of their teachings, he said.
Referring to the prime minister’s past statements and actions showing reverence for Sikh traditions, including the Government’s role in ensuring the safe return of the Guru Granth Sahib from Afghanistan, Kang said inaction in the present case could be seen as tacit consent.
Kang demanded the “sternest possible action” against Mishra, including his removal from all positions of authority and a public denunciation of his actions, saying such a step would reaffirm that the sanctity of the Gurus was non-negotiable.
Kang said the Sikh community was not seeking favour but justice and moral clarity and that timely intervention would reinforce the values for which the Gurus made their sacrifices.
