PUNE, June 17: It was a stellar effort by Shailendra Chavan who stroked 77 runs to take his team 8212; United Cricket Club 8212; to a 41 run victory over SBM in their encounter of the PDCA cricket league here.

Batting first, United Cricket Club put up a target of 193 on the board for the opponents SBM to follow, despite some excellent bowling from Rohit Kulkarni who returned figures of 3 for 31.

Seemingly rising to the challenge, SBM8217;s Ankush Kulkarni and Amol Ashtekar held the fort for some time, with 47 and 36 respectively, before the team returned from the crease with 152 for nine. Crucial in restricting the SBM batsmen were bowlers Deepak Pawar and Ashish Sangat who bagged three wickets each, at the cost of 15 and 38 runs respectively.

For Shrikrishna Cricket Club, the win came by the margin of four wickets, after taking the crease second. Chasing a target of 106, set by Kotamb Club, Rajendra Lonkar fell just four runs short of a half-century, at 46. Never looking like an imposing total from the beginning, the target was achieved by Shrikrishna CC for the loss of just six wickets, with Nitin Ranavir top scoring at 28.

The fortunes of United Cricket Club were evened out by NM Wadia club after they defeated the former with six wickets to spare in what fast turned into a one-sided encounter, notwithstanding Radhu Dhal8217;s 47. It was all-rounder Sanjay Wagela who was at the root cause of United CC8217;s misery, as he first tore the opponent8217;s innings to tatters with a brilliant bowling performance bagging six wickets at the cost of only 26 runs. He completed the downfall of United CC when he returned at the crease to pile up a 70 run contribution in his team8217;s victory total of 151 for five.

The credit for what was widely regarded as one of the easiest and most comprehensive victories of the day belongs to Smarsh Cricket Club, who overtook Pune Housing Cricket Club with a last ball of the innings six which took them to 155 for one, way ahead of Pune Housing CC8217;s 145 all out. Raju Mehtre was the top scorer for Smarsh CC, with his 71, while Vijay Mehtre followed close behind at 42. Rajiv Khare 45 held the fort for Pune Housing CC for some time, before an explosive four for 26 reduced by Sachin Rathod their innings to 145 all out.

Another of the upcoming all-rounders thrown up by the league 8212; Namdev Chakankar 8212; excelled with both, the willow and the ball, for Freedom Cricket Club as they notched up a massive 112 run win over Pravin Masalewale. Batting first, the Freedom CC line-up built on the contributions of Santosh Mohite 32, Sunil Kaduskar 33, Namdev Chakankar 30 and Swapnil Gandhile 30, to define the scoreboard at 185 for seven.

And, if this was not enough, when Freedom CC started their defence, Namdev returned in his avatar as bowler to reduce Pravin Masalewale8217;s innings to 73 all out, with an extremely economical bowling of three wickets at the cost of a meagre two runs.

Another comprehensive defeat was witnessed in the match between Vilas Eleven and New Golden Eleven Club when the former defeated the latter by a margin of 36 runs. The pair of Sachin Gogavle 64 and Navnath Gosavi 60 helped Vilas Eleven to pile up 148 for six by the end of their essay at the crease, after which the team bundled out their opponents for 112-runs.

Maheshwar Cricket Club8217;s five wicket win over Suvarna Club was anchored by Rupesh Jain8217;s bowling 8212; having taken six wickets for the cost of 11 runs. Thus, batting first, Suvarnayug Club put up 135 on the board before returning to the dressing room.

Maheshwar Cricket Club, in reply, went beyond the target with a last minute flick to the boundary ropes, ending their innings at 140 for 6. Charanjit Singh top scored at 31 for the winners.
