Zinni-Sharif talks fail to break deadlock
There was no breakthrough in the Kargil crisis today following a meeting between US Gen. Anthony Zinni and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to reduce tensions and avert an all-out war in South Asia. During the meeting, Sharif repeated his call for more international observers along the Line of Control LoC to substantiate Pakistan8217;s claim that it was not aiding militant secessionists in Kashmir.

Congress saves Bansi Lal govt
Haryana Chief Minister Bansi lal warded off the threat to his 37-month-old government, winning the vote of confidence comfortably with the support of Congress. Fifty-five MLAs voted in confidence motion moved by the Bansi Lal whereas 33 legislators voted against it. Governor Mahabir Prasad had directed Bansi Lal to seek vote of confidence on the floor of the House after the Bharatiya Janata Party withdrew support to the HVP government.
