Major assault gets underway

  • The Army today launched a major assault in the Batalik and Drass sectors of Kargil even as air strikes were resumed. The battle was particularly fierce at the crucial Tiger Hills which overlooks the Srinagar-Leh highway. The troops have destroyed several bunkers of the infiltrators on this 15,000 feet mountain and gained ground positions, advancing at 19 points. A dozen guns pulverised the post and high, grey plumes rose from the mountain.
