Bhai Ranjit Singh suspended

In a day of dramatic and swift developments today, the executive committee of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee SGPC suspended Akal Takht Jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh and appointed Giani Puran Singh as the acting Jathedar after Giani Mohan Singh, the choice made in the morning, refused to accept the office.

Illegal, says ousted chief

The Akal Takht is likely to witness noisy scenes tomorrow when Bhai Ranjit Singh chairs a meeting of Sikh clergy even as Giani Puran Singh, who was today appointed Acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht, announced postponement of the meeting. Bhai Ranjit Singh, who rejected the decision of the executive committee of the SGPC, suspending him from his position, said the decision was 8220;partisan, illegal and unfortunate8221; and had no legal and religious sanctity.

HC dismisses Tohra plea

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today dismissed the petition of SGPC president G. S. Tohra challenging the direction of the Sikh Gurudwara Judicial Commission SGJC.
