AHMEDABAD, Aug 19: A motorcycle-borne chain snatcher who snapped off necklaces from two more women with utter contempt for a chaser — his first victim’s son — was finally brought to a halt by constable who shot him in the thigh. His accomplice escaped.

Constable Mohammed Ehsan Gulam Dastgir found one Vyomesh Mohanlal Makwana (28) chasing two motorcycle-borne youths on his scooter. Police said that Vyomesh was taking his mother Laxmiben home at around 2:45 p.m. when the two youths snatched a gold chain from her neck near Naginwadi water tank.

Vyomesh chased the two on his scooter and was taken aback to see that the two again snatched a gold chain from another woman near a Swaminarayan temple in the area.

The scooter on which Vyomesh was chasing the two stoped so he took a lift from a friend, Samir Mulani, and continued the chase. Near Asopalav Society, the miscreants again snatched a gold chain from a woman and headed for Isanpur Chowki. An enraged Vyomesh then jumped on the two when they caught up with them near Isanpur Chokwi, taking them down with him.

One of the youths pulled out a revolver, but seeing several people gather, they dragged an autorickshaw driver out of his vehicle and sped away.

At this point Dastgir, who was posted there, took up the chase on a scooter. At a kutcha road, the two abandoned the rickshaw, and started running away. The constable fired a round from his rifle, which got one of the youths in the thigh. The other got away.

The youth arrested was Dharmendra Ramanuj Upadhyay (35) a resident of Suvidha Park Society, Naroda. His accomplice was identified as one Jogendra Rameshwar alias Pintu.
