Karnataka’s state-owned Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has suspended three employees for allegedly manipulating the UPI-based ticketing system to divert passenger fares to their personal accounts instead of those linked to corporation-issued devices.
The suspensions followed routine inspections conducted in December 2025 that detected serious irregularities in UPI-based ticketing practices.
According to an official, the conductors collected fares from passengers through their personal UPI scanners instead of the BMTC’s devices and issued no tickets. “Some passengers did not ask for tickets, while some others may have thought that there was no ticketing system. The conductors manipulated the system,” the official said on Wednesday.
It is suspected that the diverted amounts ranged from just over Rs 3,000 to more than Rs 54,000.
A detailed inquiry substantiated the field officers’ allegations, prompting the BMTC to initiate immediate disciplinary proceedings. The suspended personnel include two conductors and one driver-cum-conductor from the BMTC’s depots in the North East and South zones.
The BMTC has issued strict instructions to all depot managers, directing them to closely monitor officially issued UPI scanners and ensure staff strictly adhere to prescribed ticketing and revenue collection procedures. Senior officials have been asked to intensify inspections to prevent similar violations.
