In an effort to intensify offensive against Naxalites in the deep forests of Bastar, the Chhattisgarh police will soon deploy a Special Task Force, constituted on the lines of Grey Hounds of Andhra Pradesh.

Police sources said that about 3,000 police personnel have been especially trained at the Jungle Warfare School Kanker to combat the Naxalites. They have been provided commando training and advanced training to handle sophisticated weaponry.

“The trained security personnel will be placed at strategic locations in all Naxalite-prone areas in the state to launch attacks against the extremists more effectively and at a short notice,” a senior officer stated. The STF personnel have been selected from within the Chhattisgarh police. Of the 3,000 personnel, about 1,000 recruits are from the age group of 18 to 25.

Colonel Rajnish Sharma from the Army has been selected to command the STF. He is expected to join the Chhattisgarh Police as Deputy Inspector-General in the next few weeks.
