
The government has received 388 applications for setting up special economic zones, of which 105 have been approved, the Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.
Maharashtra leads the pack with 63 proposals, followed by 54 in Haryana, 53 in Andhra Pradesh, 51 in Karnataka and 42 in Tamil Nadu, minister of state for commerce Jairam Ramesh said in a written reply.
Of these, 56 new applications and 49 ratification proposals have been approved, taking the total to 105.
Ramesh said the amount of revenue lost on account of tax concessions cannot be estimated, as it was not possible to say how much investment would have taken place had there been no concessions extended to these SEZs.
Textile exports up 21.8 in FY06
India8217;s textiles and clothing exports rose 21.8 per cent to 17.08 billion in 2005-06, the first full fiscal after the dismantling of the quota regime in international trade on January 1, 2005.
The country8217;s textile and clothing exports to the US and the European Union increased by 26 per cent and 18 per cent respectively in 2005, minister of state for textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan told the Parliament in a written reply.
The US and EU together account for about two-third of India8217;s total textiles and clothing exports, he said, adding as per the latest available WTO data, the country8217;s share in world textile and clothing trade during 2004 was 4per cent and 2.8 per cent respectively. 8212; ENS
