PUNE, April 19: Following the procedure for medical and engineering admissions, the University of Pune will carry out admission to the first year Bachelor of Computer Science BCS course through the centralised admission process from the current academic year.

Approving a proposal to this effect, the varsity8217;s management council in its meeting held today decided to refer to Supreme Court8217;s guidelines for the medical and engineering admissions as the standard base for the implementation of centralised admission for the BCS course.

The decision comes on the background of several controversies pertaining to the course which surfaced last year. The varsity had been receiving several complains such as flouting of rules by the BCS colleges to accommodate more students than the permitted seats and even discrepancies in the admission process so far carried out by individual colleges.

Also, the granting of permission to certain colleges by the State Government to start the BCS course as against the university8217;s disapproval for the same had shifted the onus on the quality of computer education. The decision also caused embarrassment to the university when the High Court quashed the permission following a petition by a few Senate members protesting against the State8217;s action.

It is proposed to set up an admission cell outside the university which will monitor the admissions process. It may be noted that just recently varsity conducted the entrance test for admission to the BCS course. There are 24 colleges offering BCS course under the jurisdiction of University of Pune.

Among other business done by the council today, a five-member committee of council members was constituted for the forthcoming National Science Congress to be held in the city in January 2000. The committee comprises Dr Dilip Deobaghkar and Dr Bhushan Patwardhan organising secretaries, R S Mali, Sureshchandra Bhosale and Shivajirao Kadam.
