PUNE, Oct 24: Noted Hindi film producer-director Yash Chopra on Sunday called for an overhaul of the censor board8217;s existing guidelines in the country and urged that persons who are associated with film-making, should be appointed on the body.
Chopra was speaking at a Meet the Press8217; function organised by the Pune Union of Working Journalists. He was in the city to inaugurate the Pu La Mahotsav8216;, a festival of films, which saw literary genius P L Deshpande as an actor and director. The festival will also screen some of P L Deshpande8217;s favourite films.
The censor board8217;s guidelines have become outdated 8211; so much so that one wonders whether a censor board is required at all, the film director remarked. However, in a country like ours where the literacy level is low, there is a need to protect the viewers from being compelled to view bad8217; films, he said. quot;Unfortunately the guidelines have remained the same for the last 50 years and need to be changedquot;, he exhorted.
While stressing the need to appoint such people on the board who have sound knowledge of cinema, the director of box-office hit films Dhool ka Phool, Waqt, Deewar, Lamhe, Daag and Daar among others, also pointed out that the intention of the film-maker should be taken into consideration before certifying the film. The film director also lamented the loss of soul8217; in music today. quot;The rhythm may be there but the content is missingquot;, he said, adding that despite the talented lot in the industry, there was still no alternative to Lata Mangeshkar or Asha Bhosale. Speaking on his next venture, Chopra said he would make a film which would be globally acclaimed, but will have its origin in the Indian soil. He however said he prefers to make love stories rather than films which shows violence.
The director8217;s association with mega star Amitabh Bachchan which yielded films like Deewar and Trishul is all set to give a new film Mohabbate in which also stars Shahrukh Khan. According to Chopra, the film has the perfect role for Bachchan as he plays his age 8211; no dishum dishum, no romance and no song and dance routines8230;8217;
