Indian pugilists are having one of their finest runs at the ongoing World Cadet Boxing Championships at Baku, Azerbaijan, according to reports reaching here today.

After Vipin Kumar (50kg) and Pramod Kumar (52kg) had booked their quarter final berths one-sided wins in the second round on Sunday, it was the turn of Vikas Yadav and Durgarao Vankala to turn the heat on their opponents.

Yadav proved too good for Russian Vladimir Gavrilov in the 48kg bout as the Indian went on a scoring spree right from the bell. Even as the Russian was on the back foot, he managed to score crucial points, but Yadav was more consistent as the end result proved.

Yadav, who topscored with 29 points on the day, won with a lot to spare as the Russian managed 15 points in four rounds. Vikas will now take on Elvin de Mamishza of host country for a place in the semi-finals. The other Indian to make the last-eight stage was Durgarao Vankala in the 54 kg category. Vankala accounted for Hungarian Nagy Kristian 20-9 to set up a clash with American Frankie Gomez, who outscored Korean Kim Taek in his second round bout.

Umesh Yadav will open his campaign in the 46kg class bout today. The Indian received a bye in the first round.
