President George W. Bush appeared with Republican California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former first lady Nancy Reagan on Thursday to try to improve his election-year standing in a vote-rich state where Democrat John Kerry holds a wide lead.

In another development with political ramifications, Bush and his wife, Laura, paid a visit to Mrs. Reagan, widow of the late former President Ronald Reagan.

Her poise in handling the death and state funeral of her husband endeared her to millions of Americans. But she had split with the White House on Bush8217;s policy limiting embryonic stem cell research, which scientists say could lead to cures for diseases like Alzheimer8217;s and Parkinson8217;s.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the meeting was initiated two or three weeks ago when a member of Mrs Reagan8217;s staff contacted Bush8217;s re-election campaign to ask how she could provide support and invited Bush to come visit the next time he was in the Los Angeles area.

Mrs. Reagan has formally endorsed Bush8217;s re-election and repeated that support in a statement issued on Thursday. 8212; Reuters
