Eight people died and 10 sustained serious injuries on Wednesday morning, when a mini bus collided with a truck near Mehgaon in Kaushambi on the Allahabad-Kanpur National Highway.

The mini bus 8212; carrying around three dozen passengers belonging to Kokhraj 8212; was on its way to Allahabad from Manjhanpur.

A truck was approaching from the opposite side of the highway. Owing to fog, the drivers could not see each other, which resulted in the collision.

The deceased were identified as Gyan Singh Patel, Bholanath, Sunder Lal, Avinash Verma, Raghuraj, Gyan Chandra and Sanjay Chaudhery. The body of one of the deceased is yet to be identified.

The bodies have been sent for postmortem.

The injured were taken to SRN Hospital in Allahabad, where the condition of five was stated to be critical.

The driver of the bus, who tried to escape after the accident, was later arrested by the Puramufti police.

The truck driver, however, is absconding.
