The chief coordinator, operations, of Lashkar-e-Toiba and brain behind the attack on Akshardham temple in Gujarat, Nadimarg massacre and many fidayeen attacks on security forces was killed during an encounter in Budgam district in the early hours today.

The BSF said the slain militant, Manzoor Zahid Chowdhary, was also part of a team that planned a suicide attack in Ayodhya before December 6 last year but the plan failed as the two associates were killed in an encounter.

BSF DIG K. Srinivasan said Chowdhary was active in south Kashmir belt of Shopian, and was ambushed by police and 118 battalion of the BSF at Bogum on a track leading to Kesarmulla in central Budgam district.

The BSF recovered one AK rifle, three AK magazines, two handgrenades, a laptop, a satellite phone, a digital dairy and many incriminating documents. Analysis of the contents of a laptop, a digital diary and documents recovered from the spot reveal that Chowdhary had sent two Pakistani militants, Hafiz and Adul Hawal, to Gujarat to carry out the Akshardham attack.

The DIG said Chowdhary used several code names like Abu Marshad, Abu Nadeem, Abu Jishan, Munna and Abu Zargar to hoodwink security agencies. He said the slain ultra had visited Pahalgam on July 3 on a reconnaissance and was probably planning another suicide attack on the Amarnath yatris. He was also involved in firing on Shopian MLA during elections and mortar shelling on Army unit at Zainpora, Shopian, during last year8217;s elections.

Srinivasan did not rule out that Chowdhary came to Srinagar to disrupt Independence Day function.
