
CHANDIGARH, Aug 6: The Indian junior boxers returned home with five bronze medals in the recently concluded fourth Brandenburg Cup in Germany. India finished fifth in the 15-team competitions in 11 weight categories.
Akhil Kumar (48 kg), Lal Din Sanga (51 kg), Parveen Kumar (60 kg), Dilbagh Singh (63.5 kg) and D Bhagyarajan (63.5 kg) were the bronze medallists for India.
In quarter-final matches, Parveen Kumar beat Hockwin Mathias of Germany on points; Dilbag Singh beat Zbick Sebastian of Germany on points; D Bhagyarajan outpointed Sofiyen Grhan of Azabajan.
In earlier rounds, Parveen Kumar defeated Matuschka Guido; D Bhagyarajan beat Erhard Gerd of Germany and Akhil Kumar prevailed over Peciukonis Danas of Litauen on points.
According to CK Jerath, manager and chief delegate, Russia won the overall trophy while Germany were runners-up. Litauen were third. Boxers from Russia, Litauen, Azabajan, Greece, Kyrgistan, Austria, Poland, Netherlands, Slovakia, India and Germany competed in the meet from July 29 to August 1. The team returned on August 4.
Bhim awards
The Haryana Sports Department has invited nominations from District Sports and Youth Welfare officers for selecting five prominent sportspersons for the state’s highest sports honour – Bhim Award’ for the current year.
An official spokesman said here today that outstanding sportspersons belonging to the state should have a record of good performance for the previous three consecutive years at the national and international level with excellence.
The players should send their entries duly recommended by the District Sports and Youth Welfare Officer concerned latest by August 30.
