
BANGALORE, JUNE 22: Bombay rallied from a one-goal deficit to beat Bhopal 4-2 in a crucial Pool B match of the Tata 30th junior National hockey championship today. Bombay thus made it to the last eight stage from Pool B.
Bhopal needed a win to advance to the quarter-final, and shot into the lead in the 21st minute. The goal was a beauty as Shahid Beg showed reflex aplenty to tap in a Farzan-Ur-Rahman pass from the left.
Bombay equalised in the very next minute with Sunil Singh converting their third penalty corner. Bhopal had a close call towards the close of the first session as Stanley Fernandes8217; hit off a short corner hit the left upright and went wide.
After this brisk action, the teams slowed down the pace till the deadlock was broken by Asad Khan in the 67th minute to put Bombay ahead. Robindo Okram made it 3-1 for Bombay the next minute, scoring from their tenth penalty corner. He once again bulged the net to round off the tally in extra time. Moments before the goal was scored, Mohammed Sameer had reduced the margin for Bhopal.
In Pool E, Tamil Nadu also fought back to earn a quarter-final berth, edging out strong contenders Delhi 3-2. Consistent scorer Mohammed Nawaz provided the southern side with the match winner five minutes from close, though Tamil Nadu, enjoying a goal advantage, needed only a draw.
In Pool D, Karnataka recorded their second successive win, and have a superior goal average going into tomorrow8217;s decider against Services.
