NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 9: Delhi High Court on Thursday approved the Rs 65 lakh compensation package offered by the family of former Navy chief S N Nanda to the kin of six victims and one survivor in the BMW car hit-and-run case.Nanda's grandson Sanjiv Nanda and two of his friends are accused of crushing to death six people including three policemen while driving a BMW at a great speed here on January 10.Justice Manmohan Sarin gave his approval to the out of court settlement offered by the Nandas under which dependents of each victim got Rs 10 lakh and lone survivor Manoj received Rs five lakh. Following court's approval the dependents of the victims and the survivor withdrew a joint suit filed earlier.While disposing of several applications for interim relief by the claimants and certain objections by the defendants, Justice Sarin made it clear that the withdrawal of the suit would not in any way affect criminal proceeding in the trial court against the accused.Sanjiv and his friends are also facing trial for the charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and negligent driving.The court directed that the money should be deposited in the accounts of each legal heir in United Commercial Bank in the High Court premises as per the disbursement scheme devised by the court and interest on it could be transferred to their accounts in the banks near their residents.Bulk of the compensation amount for each victim was asked to be deposited in the fixed account of the widow or any other immediate legal heir of each victim and every minor and adult was also granted adequate share as per his age.
