OCT 12: The call, to go on strike from 9pm today, came late in the evening during the mass rally called by the Kruti Samiti, comprising of 47 unions of BMC workers at Azad Maidan today.
Though Rao carefully chose to call the action an `agitation’ and not a strike, in effect the call means that no work will be done by workers of the conservancy staff, water department, civic hosptials, deonar abbatoirs etc. On Thursday, the city is see a lot of uncleared garbage cans, dirty roads, no security to civic buildings, no ward boys and nurses in civic hospitals and even a water shortage in some places.
However, civic sources pointed out that the civic administration had prepared itself for this and it will have home-guards man the water pumps at strategic stations like those in Bhandup and Pise-Panjrapur. It was known that Ward officers were given clear-cut orders on how to combat the stir and the onus of gathering workers from private contractors have been put on them.
Union leader Sharad Rao gave the call for the agitiation despite the fact that the administration raised the quantum of ex-gratia to be paid from the earlier decided amount of Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,250-Rs 4,500.
The union leaders have demanded Rs 6000-Rs 6,500-Rs 7000. As of now, the only issue to be thrashed out is the quantum of ex-gratia to be paid as the mode of payment has been agreed to by both the parties. It has been decided that 70 percent of the ex-gratia amount will be paid this month and the rest will be paid next year after August, depending on the financial condition of the Corporation at that time.
