August 15: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC will soon issue legal notices to organisations which are using more land than was leased to them under the Vacant Land Tenancy VLT Act. This decision was taken by the Improvements Committee after committee members revealed that a large number of tenants were misusing BMC property.

The BMC assured members that the organisations would be taken to task. Deputy municipal commissioner Dattaji Desai informed that the estate department had been asked to furnish a list of such tenants with their bio-datas.

He also revealed that in the event of any action being taken, a large chunk of the Shivaji Park land at Dadar would be freed for public use. Currently, about 40 per cent of the land in the 22,000 sq mt park is being utilised by various organisations, some of whom had allegedly leased land from the BMC to set up canteens and other facilities without prior approval. He said the organisations8217; contract would be cancelled if any breach of contract was found. He cited a case where a tenant had let out corporation property to eight sub-tenants and was charging each tenant Rs 100 each, while he himself was paying only Rs 50 per month to the corporation for the entire property.
