MUMBAI, OCT 11: The civic authorities have intensified their efforts to control the rampant breeding of mosquitoes in the city after the ninth case of dengue was detected in the city recently.

The most recent case was detected at St Elizabeth Hospital at Gamdevi, a 35-year-old woman was diagnosed as suffering from dengue after she was admitted with complaints of bodyache, diarrohea and vomitting. Antibodies tests which were conducted on the patient confirmed that she was suffering from dengue, sources said.

However, according to Dr Alka Karande, executive health officer with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, sporadic cases have been surfacing but they do not indicate a spurt in the disease, she said. The BMC has issued circulars to all its medical officers, directing them to take steps to check the spread of mosquitoes. They have also been asked to identify cases of dengue.

The dengue virus is carried by aedus egypti mosquito, which breeds in clean and stagnant water. Persons who contract the disease are afflicated with severe bodyache, vomitting and fever, which is why the disease is also known as bone-breaking8217; fever.
