Probably the most versatile piece of black clothing is the little black dress. Invented by Coco Chanel back in the 1920’s, it was nicknamed by Vogue as the "Ford of Fashion". Chanel designed this dress in crepe, making it is light and easy to wear. And during summer, when Europe’s who’s who would hit the French Riviera, it became de rigueur for women to wear the little black dresses in the evening.

If you are not too tall, then opt for shorter lengths, but keep in mind, the size and shape of your legs. If you have chubby arms, then choose a dress with sleeves. And necklines are really important, so try one at least a dozen dresses before you make your mind up. Go for a lycra black dress if you have that perfect size 8 figure. Seeing a woman with hips larger than 38", squeezed into a tight dress, is an absolute eyesore. It only accentuates the flab. Older women should opt for a tailored dress and perhaps wear it with a jacket. If all these variations confuse you, then stick to the shift dress, because that suits most body shapes.

And to make sure your black dress does not look boring, always accessorise it. Wear coloured shoes and a handbag, choose some funky jewellery or throw on a printed scarf. The more creative can add an embroidered border to the neckline or at the bottom of the dress. Or you can even iron some stick-on diamonds. And lo! Your boring old dress will instantly look new and sexy.
