NEW DELHI, June 2: In the face of criticism that the Vajpayee-led Government has been subject to over Kargil, the Bharatiya Janata Party today tried to take comfort in the Lahore Declaration.

Pakistan is in the dock today because it specifically agreed in the declaration that it would desist from interfering in the internal affairs of India and join it to stamp out terrorism of all forms, BJP general secretary Narendra Modi said.

The declaration is India8217;s commitment to peace for Governments all over the world to see. The fact that the declaration has been violated by Pakistan was the reason why India was receiving unprecedented diplomatic support for its action to drive the intruders out, he said.

The BJP leader berated the Congress for denouncing the Prime Minister for signing Lahore Declaration while Pakistan was busy preparing for intruding into Kargil. 8220;To conclude from the intrusion that the Lahore Declaration has failed borders on foolishness. Pakistan has repeatedly violated the Shimla Agreement in the past. Does that mean signing the Shimla Agreement was foolish or that the Shimla Agreement itself has collapsed,8221; Modi asked.

The BJP leader criticised the Congress for not behaving as a responsible Opposition and giving political colour to incidents of national interest when our soldiers were laying their lives down for the country.
