Let’s be honest, we are always curious to learn how stars and celebrities manage their wealth. In a conversation with journalist Faye D’Souza, Madhuri Dixit opened up about how she handled her money when she started working at a young age. “When I started working, it was just small sums of money, we did small expenses – we bought a car or something else, but once I started working, I got so busy I did not have time to do anything, let alone look after my money. My dad used to do most of the managing,” she said.

Sharing how her financial journey changed for the better, the Devdas actor said, “But I learned to do most of it after I got married, from my husband. That was when I really learned to, because he is very good at it. He’s always teaching me how to invest, where to invest, and how to find out about companies. I knew very little about money management before, but I know a lot now.”

Mukesh Pandey, Director of Rupyaa Paisa, believes building a healthy money mindset involves saving and investing first, then spending with intention. Having a “save-and-invest-first” mindset helps you build assets, reduce financial stress, and ultimately afford a lifestyle backed by security, not just appearance.

In a world that celebrates influencer culture and posts about luxury lifestyles, it is easy to get trapped in the cycle of spending money to be deemed cool by peers.

“Designer goods, fancy gadgets, and high-end experiences can provide instant gratification, but they hardly offer a guarantee of long-term security. Why? Because freedom isn’t bought with gaudy purchases, but discipline,” he told indianexpress.com.

When you prioritise saving and investing, Pandey says you’re not depriving yourself, but empowering your future. A strong money mindset helps you resist impulse buying, forces you to choose intentional spending, and puts you on the road toward opportunity or emergency preparation.

How can you build a healthy money mindset?

Pay yourself first: Treat your savings as a monthly bill. Automate transfers to your savings or investment accounts before spending on anything else.

Set clear financial goals: Whether it’s buying a home or retiring early, a goal gives your money purpose and direction.

Track every rupee: Awareness becomes crucial to your revenue. If you cannot trace your outgoings, how can you analyse them, plug leaks, and change your habits for the better?

Delay gratification: Put every non-essential in your mind on hold for 24 hours, and you will realise many were unworthy to begin with.

Invest wisely: Make your cash stand for you—every little bit under the influence of time managed to turn small amounts into heavy wealth.

In Madhuri Dixit’s case, her husband played a pivotal role in shaping her financial journey – teaching her the basics of investing and guiding her on the right path. “Couples who do not communicate openly about their finances, including income levels and debt, can often feel pressured, both as individuals and as a couple,” said Pandey.

According to him, having regular monthly chats regarding financial situations, establishing savings and investment plans, disclosing credit and spending behaviour, and discussing upcoming expenses become fundamental aspects of couples’ financial wellness. With honest and transparent communication about finances, couples can create stronger financial partnerships and improve trust between one another.
