Making political capital out of the Nithari incident to corner the Mulayam Singh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP has called for the resignation of the Chief Minister and a CBI probe alleging that influential people may have been involved in the disappearance of the victims.
Taking the same line as the Congress, which too has called for a CBI inquiry and the resignation of the CM now in the middle of a political storm over the administration’s handling of the case, said the state government had failed to maintain law and order and referred to the death of children, which came to light 15 days ago.
However, he said the Centre was equally responsible for not taking cognizance of the Nithari killings, which continued despite repeated complaints from area residents. “The Centre is equally responsible. They attack the SP during the day but (the two sides) come together at night.”
Party general-secretary Vinay Katiyar, who on Wednesday went to the Noida Sector 31 house where Moninder Singh Pandher lived, said the state government had not moved on reports of the disappearances, and party MP Ashok Pradhan had written no fewer than six letters to Yadav since January last year and had met him on the issue.
Even now, little was being done for the victims and the cheques for compensation given to the families of the victims were being taken back by the administration on the plea that there were some errors, Katiyar said. Katiyar, who visited Noida along with Pradhan, presented Nand Lal, father of Payal, a victim, to mediapersons. Lal claimed he had been threatened and harassed by the police.
Katiyar tried to deflect criticism that the BJP itself had dragged its feet in reacting to the Nithari killings, saying apart from the letters from Pradhan, the party had been taking up the issue on a regular basis with the police.
