CHANDIGARH, July 10: The Punjab and Haryana Chamber of Commerce and Industry PHDCCI has highlighted that the government should reorient its employment policy to achieve higher productivity, more real wage earnings and improve the quality of workers8217; life.

In a statement issued here, the chamber highlighted that the labour force is projected to increase by 36 million in the period between 1997-2002. As against the 2.2 per cent per annum growth of employment during 1971-1991, an average growth rate of three per cent would be required in the next ten years to bring a near-total employment situation by 2002 AD.Thus, the total number of persons in need of employment who were around 58 million during 1992-97 will increase to 94 million over the ten year period from 1992-2002. The PHDCCI has asserted that this should be the national agenda and that all political parties should focus on the problem.

PNB holds state-level bankers8217; meet
The Punjab National Bank convened 66th meeting of the State Level Bankers Committee Haryana here today. In the meeting the role of banks in development of the state and their performance was highlighted.

The meeting was presided over by Chairman and Managing Director of Punjab National Bank Rashid Jilani. Chief General Manager of RBI Radhey Shyam and General Manager of PNB R.P.Gupta also participated in the meeting.

Rashid Jilani pointed that although the banks were getting support from the state government in recovery of dues, the progress in certificate cases was slow. While speaking on the performance of the banks in Haryana, Jilani said that 40 new branches of commercial and regional rural banks were opened, raising the number of branches from 1401 to 1441.

March appointed MD
Michael March has been appointed Managing Director for National Geographic Channel Asia, a press release stated.

March would be responsible for managing the launch phase of National Geographic Channel8217;s business operations in Asia as well as the Middle East.He would be take care of the development of strategic business initiatives and oversee the channel8217;s programming, marketing, distribution, advertising sales, promotions and finance. He would be based in Singapore.
