To help develop an understanding of current affairs, strengthen reading habits, and improve language skills among students, the Rajasthan government has launched an initiative mandating daily newspaper reading in government schools.

As per guidelines issued by the Education Department, at least two newspapers, one in English and one in Hindi, should be ordered in the higher secondary school; two Hindi newspapers should be ordered in every government higher primary school; and a minimum of one English and Hindi newspaper each should be ordered in English-medium government schools. These have to be read daily during the prayer meeting.

As per the guidelines issued by School Education Department Secretary Krishna Kunal, editorials and major national and international news developments as well as sports reports will be read. Additionally, to strengthen students’ vocabulary, five new words, along with their meaning, will be introduced daily. The order states that students from classes 6 to 12 should be given the responsibility of reading major editorials and news items.

Students assigned the task of reading the day’s news will have to come to school 30 minutes earlier and prepare. And on ‘No Bag Day’, mass gatherings will be held to discuss the activities of the government, the order says.

Education Department officials said that this initiative “will increase students’ interest in news, expand their general knowledge, and positively improve their language and expression skills, as well as social awareness and also help them prepare for competitive exams. This step is an important effort toward developing students into aware, thoughtful, and self-confident citizens.” Kunal said that the initiative will also help students develop a reading habit.
