Three students are believed to have died during police firing in Sasaram today to quell protests against moves to prevent fraudulent measures during intermediate examinations.

Only one death, however, has been confirmed by Patna Range IG A.C. Verma. Forty people have reportedly been injured in the firing, which is a repeat of the violence in Nalanda following action against a girl over cheating. The situation is still tense in Sasaram and reserve police force has been deployed in the town.

Earlier in the day, four students, in their teens, were expelled from S.K. Jain College after they were caught cheating during the exams. Soon afterwards, a mob comprising students and, according to police, several anti-socials descended on the college.

Apart from attacking the college, they targeted the Sasaram Railway Station and set fire to a train engine and a few booths. Later, they attacked the Sasaram Sadar Hospital. Police said the mob attacked them with countrymade pistols, and that they had no choice but to fire back.

In Nalanda, violence had broken out over the expulsion of Smriti Sinha from a college in Biharsharief for cheating. While the action was taken last Thursday and Smriti had returned home, her mother had returned with a mob and ransacked the college.

Protests stretched till yesterday, with a 500-strong crowd including 200 women, attacking several colleges in Biharsharief town. Nalanda SP Amit Lodha says they were forced to 8216;8216;go soft8217;8217; as 8216;8216;girls formed the first line of attack8217;8217;.

Incidentally, Ranjit 8216;Don8217;, believed to be the CAT cheating scam mastermind, hails from Nalanda. He has announced that he will be fighting the coming Lok Sabha polls from here.
