SEVILLE, AUG 28: The IAAF will start the new millennium with the biggest marathon in history on January 1, when 50,000 runners going for the classic distance after a Papal blessing.

The world athletics body8217;s boss Primo Nebiolo yesterday said he had asked all 210 member federations to send as many runners as possible to the Rome event.

Nebiolo dismissed criticism that the event collided with the traditional new year8217;s eve run in Sao Paulo: 8220;One is on the last day of the old millennium, the other on the first day of the new one.8221;

However, they are not a hidden reserve, but there to prevent the bed from collapsing under the weight of the 140-kilo athlete.
