PUNE, Nov 11: Former municipal commissioner Arun Bhatia left town recently to take up an assignment with the UN-OPS, a wing of the United Nations Development Fund, after receiving necessary clearance from the Government and his parent cadre.

Bhatia, who was offered the job on October 21, left immediately after he was granted clearance by the State Government on November 6. According to Preeti Bhatia, his wife, the clearance was granted by new Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. 8220;He was on leave anyway. Having served earlier with the United Nations, he decided to take up the job,8221; she said.

Bhatia will be working as consultant to UN-OPS in rural development programmes and will have a tenure of six months. 8220;His tenure could be extended after that, 8221; Mrs Bhatia said. Bhatia leaves amidst an ongoing probe launched by the State Government following his 8220;representation8221; to the State Urban Development secretary demanding the dissolution of the Pune Municipal Corporation PMC.

In his 8220;representation8221; Bhatia had alleged several irregularities in the functioning of the PMC and demanded that it be dissolved as per section 452 of the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act.
