A CPIM central committee member and a front-ranking state party leader lashed out at West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, apparently for his role in seeking to resolve the recent Singur stand-off, accusing him of being a 8220;hypocrite8221;.
8220;We can endure his brutality but not hypocrisy. He is a hypocrite and shameless,8221; the central committee member Benoy Konar said in reply to questions on the sidelines of a meeting of CPIM8217;s peasant wing All India Kisan Sabha.
8220;In the assembly he Gandhi refers to the state government as 8216;my government8217; but if he has any shame he should contest a parliamentary seat on a Trinamool Congress ticket8221;.
Comparing him to former Governor S S Dhawan who did not get on well with the then Left Front government, Konar said unlike him, Gandhi had a 8220;sugar coating8221;.
Asked why Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee had particularised in talks at Raj Bhavan in which the Governor was a mediator to find a way out of the Singur impasse early last month, Konar said 8220;if we had stayed away, we would have been branded as not being sincere in solving the problem.8221;
To a question, he said the lesson that was drawn from Singur was that the government would have to be pro-active and tough in future projects for which land would have to be acquired.
He claimed the opposition took advantage of the 8216;patience8217; of the state government in handling the situation.
In future, Konar said, if force was used to implement projects, people would realise that there was no other option.
He said he would welcome if any alternative industry or a cluster of industries came up on the land where the Tatas8217; Nano car project had been abandoned.
