SANGRUR, Dec 27: Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs Surjit Singh Barnala has assured rice mills and other allied industries to sort out their problems, besides accepting their demands regarding relaxation in specifications of the levy rice keeping in view the unfavourable climatic conditions.

Barnala announced this yesterday while addressing a seminar on the problems of paddy mills in Punjab, its magnitude, root cause, solution and consequent gains.

Barnala expressed grave concern over the conditions of the agro-based industry of the state in general and of Sangrur district in particular. He said he did not believe in just announcements, but in solving the problems of the people. He summoned representatives of the rice mills to New Delhi to discuss their problems.

Infuriated over the failure of Barnala to announce any concession, the rice millers of Barnala, which is the native town of the Union Minister, rushed to the dais and threw the keys of their shellers before Barnala saying they no longer could manage the shellers. The organisers had a tough time trying to cool the people.

Punjab Solvent Extractors Association president A.R. Sharma in his address highlighted the problems faced by rice millers.

M.P. Singh, chairman, north zone, Solvent Extractors Association of India, explained how the problem affected the functioning of oil extraction and processing industries and had its impact on the prices of essential commodities such as edible oils, vanaspati and soap etc.

Punjab Cattle Feed Manufacturer8217;s Welfare Association president Dharamveer Gupta, Sangrur Kisan Union president Jhanda Singh, Minister for Youth Welfare Gobind Singh Kanjhla, PSEB member administration Baldev Singh Mann and New Delhi Super Bazar chairman Surinder Singh Dhuri were among those who spoke on the problem of rice millers.
