Indian national record holder Bobby Alloysius was eliminated in the qualifying round of the high jump event tonight.
Bobby, who set a national record of 1.91 metres in the Inter-State Meet in Chennai last month, failed in all her three attempts at 1.89 metres and was out of the competition.
Bobby began with 1.75, which she cleared in her first attempt, and went on to sail over at 1.80, again in her first attempt. But then began her problems. She knocked 1.85 before clearing in the second attempt and then failed at the subsequent heights.
Using Fosbury Flop, Bobby cleared 1.80 in first attempt but she was looking tired. She could not get a good lift off the ground and knocked the bar with her left leg even as her torso passed over the cross bar.
The lanky Kerala athlete, who was competing in Group A with 16 others, went close to clearing 1.89m on her second attempt but clipped the bar on her way down.
8220;It was one of those days when I failed to get anything extra. And the heat also added to my problems, said the 30-year-old athlete, reminiscing on a pathetic performance.
The automatic qualification mark to reach the final was 1.95m or else the top 12 will make it to the title round.
Currently, Bobby is studying sports psychology in England and raining under the British coach Dennis Doyle.
Incidentally, Doyle was sitting in the stands tonight. Bobby had paid his travel expenses and bought tickets to watch the Games.
