Even as the national selectors fiddle around with the Team India top order to find the right combination, one man who has the credibility to fill in the gap is quietly working hard to make a comeback. Sanjay Bangar, currently in Delhi with the Railways team he captains, has ‘‘not given up’’ yet and is plotting a comeback.
Bangar, who has a century to his credit (vs Zimbabwe at Nagpur in 2002) from the 12 matches he played so far, says, ‘‘If I am still playing domestic cricket, one reason is that I still hope to play for the country.’’
And if he does get picked, it should be at the top of the order, where he was sent up as a stop-gap solution after debuting at number seven.
Bangar, however, refrains from saying more on his chances for a recall. His performance has been better than that of many others’ who have been given a go after him, and he probably wants his performances to speak for him.
If Bangar didn’t want to comment on his chances, his coach Vinod Sharma was more forthcoming.
‘‘A couple of good performances in domestic matches and he’ll surely be in contention again. He’s a committed cricketer who gives 100 per cent to the team’s success. He’s a fighter to the core and will keep performing to force the selectors to pick him again,’’ Sharma said.
