
NEW DELHI, SEPT 24: Market leaders Bajaj Auto and LML witnessed a sharp fall in their sales during the first five months of the current fiscal despite a 6.34 per cent growth in the two-wheeler sector.
Both the companies were severely affected by the drop in sales of scooter segment, which fell by 8.23 per cent during April-August compared to a buoyant 24.67 per cent growth in motorcycles, according to latest figures of Society for Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
Overall sales of Bajaj Auto, which has products in all the three segments of two-wheeler sector, dropped by 7.8 per cent during the period to 3,90,204 units from 4,23,210 units in April-August last year.
TVS Suzuki, which also has products in the three segments- scooters, motorcycles and mopeds 8211; recorded an overall growth of 26.04 per cent during April-August selling a total of 3,44,012 units compared to the same period last year. In scooters, the sales of both Bajaj Auto and LML fell by 13.5 per cent each during the period to 2,28,192 unitsand 1,20,634 units respectively.
In sharp contrast, sales of motorcylcles shot up with market leader Hero Honda registering a 39.08 per cent growth in sales to 2,77,319 units and TVS Suzuki recording a 34.41 per cent growth to 1,35,835 motorcycles.
In the scooter segment only two companies, Kinetic Motor Company and TVS Suzuki increased their sales during April-August. Kinetic Motors8217; sales grew by 28.05 per cent to 44,186 units.
