Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra returns to DU with some political talk
His Rang De Basanti revolved around Delhi college students who were yanked out of their carefree lives into leading a Bhagat Singh-style political revolution. Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra got a taste of the indifference of Delhi collegians towards politics when he was invited to Hindu College by the Bangalore-based NGO Janaagraha to urge them to vote in general elections next year.
Mehra was earnestly asking the students to spearhead the political change they seek when a chattering crowd irreverently walked away to hear the band Parkirama that started performing outside as part of the ongoing college fest. Mehra was his composed self. 8220;Everybody has the right to choose what they want to do. But this act doesn8217;t reflect the mood of the entire youth of this country.
There are young people who have given up lucrative jobs such as investment banking to work for society. And they didn8217;t decide to do so after a sudden awakening. It8217;s not instant coffee. I am sure these youngsters will come around,8221; he said.
Reminiscing his college days, Mehra said although he spent three years at SRCC, his first day at DU was spent at Hindu College. In the past 25 years, he has never experienced the kind of 8220;national stirring8221; that post-26/11 saw. 8220;It8217;s like the climax of RDB,8221; he said.
