Azlan Shah team selection delayed by another day

.

The new hockey selection committee was expected to finalise the team for the Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia on Thursday. But the five Olympians are still trying to figure out the mess that Indian hockey is in.

The committee met for the first time on Thursday and at least promised transparency in all future decisions.

8220;The selection process will be transparent and we8217;ll make the coaches accountable for the Indian team8217;s performance,8221; chief selector Aslam Sher Khan said.

Ajitpal Singh, Ashok Kumar, Zafar Iqbal and Dhanraj Pillay are the other selectors appointed by the Indian Olympic Association IOA, though Pillay was absent.

Eleven players from the junior team practicing here were supposed to be joined by seven from the senior squad 8212; currently in Australia 8212; in Kuala Lumpur.

8220;Combining two teams will disrupt the rhythm of both. Also, while the chief coach was supposed to go from India, the rest of the support staff would join in from Australia. All this doesn8217;t make sense,8221; said one selector. The team will now only be finalised on Friday.

IOA secretary-general Randhir Singh said there will be no interference in selection, while Khan said though coaches will have a big say in the decisions, they will be made accountable for performances.
