AUDA turns a blind eye to illegal building at Memnagar

.

It seems it can happen only in an organisation like the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority AUDA that building plans are passed mysteriously and constructions come up in total violation of norms. The case in point is the construction of a six-storey building at Memnagar on a 10-metre wide road.

Although the plot near Navendu Society belonged to AUDA, a temple was built there in no time in the aftermath of post-Godhra riots in 2002. AUDA never tried to remove the temple and later sold the plot to a private party as a commercial plot.

Builder N K Patel, who purchased the plot, decided to bring a residential scheme there this year and has already constructed five floors on this land situated along a 30-foot wide road. This is in clear violation of the norms laid under the General Development Control Regulations, approved by the Urban Development Department.

Moreover, the site has no plaque giving details of the construction and that of the approving authority. Not even the name of the scheme is mentioned on the spot.

While AUDA chief executive authority D Thara could not be contacted, estate and city improvement officer Pritam Raut said that no construction in excess of ground-plus-two floors is permissible on a 30-foot wide road.

8220;If such a construction is coming up anywhere, it is in violation of rules and regulations,8221; Raut said, adding that he would get the spot checked for violation and necessary action would be taken.

Vipulbhai, who is responsible for the engineering plans and oversees the work, said the plot was purchased from AUDA long ago and that the plan was passed by the development authorities. 8220;AUDA has passed the plan and the land was also purchased from them only,8221; he said.

He said that Patel, his uncle, is about to complete the scheme and there is no issue left for taking up with any authority. So, it still remains undecided as to who is to blame for the gross irregularity: the builder or AUDA officials.
