Recently a distraught mother came to see me with her overweight daughter. The daughter was picking up zany diets from the internet and at the time was on the so called Zone Diet.

The Zone Diet has been around for some time and has had its share of celebrity fans. The main features are:

8226; The 8220;key to success8221; is the intake of carbohydrates, proteins and fat in proportion of 40:30:30. Proponents claim it achieves a hormonal balance conducive to weight loss.

8226; It is not a 8220;single size fit all8221; diet. There are plenty of food choices in same category.

8226; No food is forbidden but some high-carbohydrate-low glycemic foods like breads, pasta, and banana are definitely to be avoided.

8226; Five meals including 2 snacks daily is a must.

8226; It is touted as a lifestyle change programme and not merely as a diet. Exercise is encouraged.

Warning: The intake ratio is at variance with the healthy diet ratio prescribed by the ICMR and NAS of US which advises 50- 60 per cent carbohydrates, 15 to 25 per cent protein and less than 30 per cent fat. The American Heart Association says this diet is hazardous as it restricts essential vitamins and minerals. Some researchers indicate that the protein in this diet is too high and could result in bone loss. The diet may also pose a cancer risk due to its high meat content. But a major deterrent in practicing this is the complex and daily task of estimating and measuring foods with accuracy.

A few pluses: The weight loss is real. Studies on popular diets also confirm that low carb diets can induce rapid weight loss. Thus, for a severely obese individual this diet may seem like a good option.

Do I endorse this diet? No, not till the long term safety and efficacy reports are clear.
