At IUCAA, matters reach a head

Experts may reveal shocking statistics on the dangers of driving without helmets, newspapers may carry enlightening articles on this subject, but it seems Puneites insist on turning a blind eye to this vital issue. However, it is gladdening to note, that there are individuals who try their bit, to spread the message of wearing helmets.8217; One such person is the internationally acclaimed astro-physicist, Jayant Naralikar, who ardently believes that helmets must be used by every vehicle driver.

A few months ago, this newspaper had carried an extensive article on Dr. S.M Sarin8217;s research on why helmet-wear must be made compulsory. Ever since, the notice board, at the reception of the IUCAA has displayed a photo copy of this article with a message from Naralikar stating: 8220;All IUCAA members and their families are strongly urged to wear a HELMET. I will arrange a discussion on this issue in the next staff meeting. Meanwhile, please read the following questions/answers on why you should wear helmets.8221;

Dr. Arvind Paranjpye, a senior staff member of the IUCAA, states 8220;Dr. Naralikar is very particular about two-wheeler riders wearing helmets and has been requesting his staff members not to move around without one. This has motivated most of the staffers to wear helmets 8211; only very few do not use one, despite his appeal.8221;

Kudos to Naralikar who has been warning his people to mind their heads, thus showing that he indeed has a soft heart.
