Just in time before the mass exodus from Bombay during Christmas and New Year the Taj unveiled their 29 feet long Husain at the Grand Re-launch of their new opulent lobby designed by world famous Interior Design firm Hirsch Bednner. With the customary flying women and horses this predominantly ochre and red painting flanks the entire back wall of the lobby and was kept a surprise, marking the climax of the party when Ratan Tata unveiled the work and M F Husain signed it while celebrities like Sunny Gavaskar, Shobha De, CEOs of corporates and bankers looked on. Dot coms have also invaded the art world and December saw Saffronart.com, the first serious art site for India, in the first event of its kind-the online auction of Indian Contemporary Art. Out of 134 works available they sold almost 70 to serious collectors as well as first-time buyers worldwide. Specific works such as Baiju Parthanacirc;euro;trade;s Residue of a normal day II, F N Souzaacirc;euro;trade;s Still Life, and Yusuf Arakkalacirc;euro;trade;s Kites were heavily contested, with bids beingplaced in the closing minutes of the allocated lots.

Zarir is a patron of the arts and has been known to host serious and well orchestrated events like the last one which was the inaugural extravaganza of world fashionhouse Ermenegildo Zegna for the cause of heritage preservation.

Another memorable event hosted by them was the Christiesacirc;euro;trade; auction for the National Association for the Blind. In addition, this year HSBC is the principal sponsor for the Kala Ghoda Festival.

It was the largest work that Jitish has done so it was important for him to share it with the Bombay art world. The core concerns in this work are consistent with those of his works in general birth, death, survival and mortality. acirc;euro;oelig;While the meanings generated by the image is of great importance to me, I was at all times alert to the dynamics of that large space.acirc;euro;

Watch Out For: The 8 feet vertically by 20 feet horizontally painting comprises large self-images on either side that pose almost like guardians carrying organs of the body as if they are trophies of endurance; whilst another carries a wreath made up of hands at work instead of a wreath of flowers. Another panel shows a thick Bombay crowd juxtaposed with the image of an animal going about the business of feeding itself. It is through such metaphorical evocations that he constructs the narrative.
