Edison Mendez scored in the 61st minute Tuesday to give PSV Eindhoven a 1-0 win over Arsenal in the first leg of the second round of the Champions League.

Mendez controlled a pass from Arouna Kone and sent a long range shot into the bottom corner of Jens Lehmann8217;s goal to cap a strong start to the second half by PSV

Arsenal was the stronger team in the first half but failed to turn its pressure into clear chances.

Cesc Fabregas, Tomas Rosicky and Alexander Hleb repeatedly threatened the PSV defense as they surged out of midfield.

Rosicky came closest to scoring before the break when he exchanged passes with Thierry Henry in the 13th minute and sent a low shot that PSV goalkeeper Gomes got a hand to before Carlos Salcido cleared it from the line.

Late in the first half, Henry had three shots, twice shooting at Gomes while his third effort curled wide. PSV started the second half much stronger and Kone had a chance in the 54th but he shot wide from close range after a long cross.

Two minutes after Mendez scored, Philippe Senderos was given a yellow card for a deliberate handball that halted another quick PSV break. Gomes kept his team in the lead with a reflex save that turned a powerful shot from Fabregas over the bar in the 69th.
