To prevent misuse of identity cards, the Indian Army has decided to issue smart cards to its men across the country. The decision was taken after a few Army identity cards were recovered from the possession of militants in Jammu and Kashmir a couple of months back.

Informing this, General Officer Commanding-in-Charge, Northern Command, Lt Gen H S Panag said concerned about the misuse of Army identity cards in some cases a proposal in this connection was recently mooted by the top brass of the Indian Army to the Central Government.

He also said the DRDO was working on these cards, which would be prepared on the pattern of the access cards issued by multi-national companies MNCs to its employees. These smart cards will be issued to armymen across the country to check their misuse in any manner, especially by militants in Jammu and Kashmir.

8220;In Jammu and Kashmir, a blatant misuse of Army identity cards have been reported and a few of them were also recovered from the possession of militants,8221; Lt Gen Panag said. He said: 8220;Although fewer such cases have been reported during the past several years of insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir, the issue of their recovery from the possession of militants cannot be set aside or ignored. Unless corrective measures are taken it may have severe ramifications in the future. Therefore, the Army decided to go for a change in the pattern and proposed it to the Central Government.8221;
