The flood situation in Andhra Pradesh remained grim on Sunday, with the death toll in three days of heavy rains in coastal and Telengana region rising to 62.

Chief Minister YSR Reddy made an aerial survey of affected districts. Relief and rehabilitation measures were being undertaken on a war footing, officials said.

The rains, triggered by a depression over the Bay of Bengal, pounded northern Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts, while other areas in coastal and Telengana regions saw a deluge that left a trail of destruction and death, they said.

The Godavari in Bhadrachalam had risen to 63.3 feet 10 feet above danger mark prompting the authorities to shift about 14,000 families to relief camps.

Toll 15 in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Fifteen people have died in rain-related incidents in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, prompting authorities to evacuate over 10,000 people. Five were killed in a wall collapse at Nanded in Marathwada region on Sunday, sources said. The death toll in Saturday8217;s house collapse in Akola district in Vidarbha region has risen to six with three more bodies being recovered from the debris, police said.
